The spirit of the occult has existed since the beginning of time. Like an insidious cancer—unseen, patient, deadly—it has grown. While church attendance declines across the world, the occult expands their "services" to meet the desires and mystical interests of a spiritually hungry world. Dabbling in the realm of the occult is currently stylish. Even some Christians seem unable to avoid the attraction of this colorful, seductive world whether its interacting with mediums, astrology, fortune telling, pendants, New Age, ouiji boards, psychic phenomena, or false visionaries. In an attempt to warn the faithful about the dangers that lurk behind unhealthy devotions, the Catholic Church says: "All practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one's service and have a supernatural power over others—even if this were for the sake of restoring their health—are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion."( Catechism of the Catholic Church)
